Ottawa OD Day 2012 demands

At today's Overdose Awareness Day event at the Human Rights Memorial in Ottawa, Sean and Gilles of DUAL presented the following list of demands on behalf of people who use drugs in Ottawa. We at CSCS Ottawa fully support these demands, and call on municipal, provincial, and federal governments to take action now to help prevent further unnecessary overdose deaths.

We of the Ottawa Overdose Awareness Day organizing committee hereby immediately demand:
  1. Immediate and unrestricted access to supervised injection services;
  2. Proper surveillance and recording by the municipality and coroner of all overdose deaths, and permission to access these statistics in a timely manner so that measures can be taken to prevent further deaths;
  3. Access to training and funding of overdose awareness programs for peers developed and led by peers;
  4. For all levels of government to formally recognize that harm reduction services are the most important pillar of any official drug strategy.

Drug users are people too, and we deserve to exist!

Thank you DUAL, and thank you to all the organizers of today's event.
